MY JOURNEY
Like so many of us, I grew up thinking that I couldn’t sing. At school I was put in the ‘Moody Choir’, the compulsory choir for those of us who didn’t want to be in the ‘proper’ choir and who no doubt pulled moody faces at the prospect of singing, especially in front of an audience! I found that I couldn’t reach the higher notes in most of the songs they asked us to sing and so it was an uncomfortable experience on all levels and left me feeling vulnerable and incapable.
So, in 2009, at age 30, it came as quite a surprise to unexpectedly discover a singing voice I never knew I had, and a feeling that this voice was coming from the depths of my heart and soul.
I’d been on a journey of spiritual discovery for many years and combined with my lifelong love for nature and animals, I had found myself quite naturally drawn to Shamanic Wisdom and practices. At this time, I was in the midst of studying the Shamanic Medicine Wheel with my friend, teacher and elder, Maggie, and we were also diving deep into the use of Fire Ceremony as a transformation tool for personal and spiritual growth and intentional energetic healing.
I was spending a lot of time sitting with the Fire, usually beneath the Moon and Stars, close to the elements and surrounded by the seasonal song and dance of Nature. My conscious awareness of my interconnectedness with All That Is was deepening, and I could feel an intuitive connection to the Divine Essence that weaves us all as One.
This time of awakening was bringing great revelations and inspiration, and I was learning (or maybe even remembering) how to feel and hear the messages of wisdom and guidance which were whispering to my heart through the rocks, the plants, the trees, the animals, the birds, and through the flickering flames of Fire.
When I look back, I can see that my work with Fire was clearing and cleansing energy that no longer served me and simultaneously sparking a creative fire within me, and rising up on those inner flames was this powerful, soulful voice and the songs it wished to sing to the world. Songs of Love and Peace, rooted in the wisdom of Nature and shining with the Spirit of Love.

The first time I publicly shared one of my songs was around a big communal campfire and beneath a huge shimmering moon. Encouraged by continuous nudges from my partner at the time, I bravely stood up and said that I had a song to share. My legs trembling like jelly, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, listened to the familiar and comforting crackle of the knowing Fire and opened my heart to let the voice of my soul echo through the starry night.
It felt like a homecoming, as if, in that moment, I was doing what I was destined to do. My song was received with wide glistening eyes, big smiles, hands on hearts and a mesmerising silence. I think those that knew me were as shocked as I was! I will never forget that night. It was the beginning of my faith in my voice and the start of my journey as a Luminary Songstress.
A phrase I later chose to best define my emerging craft.

In the years that have followed, my love for singing and song writing has deepened and evolved, my voice has strengthened, and my determination to accompany my voice has led me to teach myself to play a number of different instruments, including Guitar, Ocean Harp, Shamanic Drum and Native American Flute. I have written songs that have touched people hearts and souls in ways I never could have imagined and, braving the unknown realms of recording studios, I have worked with sound engineers to produce albums that, thanks to the internet, can now reach a worldwide audience. I have performed and held workshops all over the UK, from wellbeing events and retreats, to yoga studios, primary schools, homes for the elderly, social clubs, festivals, weddings and wakes. In huge woodlands and tiny back gardens, in cosy sitting rooms and on wild vast wide open beaches. It’s as if this Voice, this gift I never knew I had, has taken me on its journey and carried me to people and places I never could have expected, bringing love, light, joy, peace and healing along the way.
For thousands of years many ancient cultures have used music as ‘medicine’, with the intention of bringing about inspiration, healing, spiritual connection and the gathering of community, and this is one of the reasons why I now class my music as ‘Medicine Music’, for it is my hope that my music and my workshops and performances reflect all of these qualities.
